On-campus Residence Facilities:
On-campus housing is provided as part of the tuition cost. All interns are required to reside in the dormitory style housing provided, as the intra-cultural living environment is an important forum for the diversity and informal networking that are fundamental aspects of the program.
Each dormitory has three floors with common areas on the ground floors and two floors of bedrooms. Each intern shares a bedroom with another intern.
Floors are divided by gender as each floor has a communal bathroom with sinks, toilets, and showers. One set of basic linens (sheets, pillows, pillowcases and two towels) is provided to each intern. They must wash their own linens and reuse during the six-week stay. There are coin-operated clothes washers and dryers in the dormitories.
Each dorm has two common areas and a large kitchen on the ground floor. The common areas include a living room with television and video/DVD player and a dining area; those same rooms in the second dorm are a game room (with ping-pong and billiards tables) and a second living room with another television and stereo.
Cooking facilities: Kitchens are each stocked with refrigerators, sinks, gas ovens and stoves, electric microwaves, basic pots and pans, cooking utensils etc. Weekly trips are provided to local grocery stores, electronics stores, and general merchandise centers (such as Wal*Mart)
Key deposits: You will need to have US $50 for your key deposit at the time you check-in at the residence halls.
Insurance:
You are required to have medical insurance during the 6 weeks of the Global Village. You are able to purchase it through Lehigh University at a cost of approximately US $170 for the entire period of GV 2008. If you would like to pre-purchase medical insurance please send your payment to Alicia and we will have a medical card ready for you at check-in. If it is more convenient for you, we will accept payment on check-in day to purchase the medical insurance, and you will be receiving a medical card two weeks later. If you choose not to purchase this medical insurance, you must bring proof of private insurance to check-in. If you fail to bring VALID medical insurance to cover you for the six weeks of the Global Village, you will be required to purchase it upon check in for $170 USD. Valid Medical Insurance is described as insurance that covers you in while studying abroad. Please view the website for any additional questions www.universityhealthplans.com
Weather:
Usually hot and humid, but the only thing for sure is that nothing is for sure.
Clothing:
Regular class days: the default dress is business casual: khakis and a golf shirt, summer pants or skirts for women; no shorts, bare midriffs or halter tops)
Hosting executive visitors/ visits to clients: business formal unless otherwise indicated; i.e. suit, jacket and tie, etc.
Recreation/ sports/ outdoor activities: shorts, T-shirts, sneakers, bare midriffs, swimsuits, and other casual summer wear.
Black tie is optional for the Closing Dinner/ Graduation (women should wear an evening dress)
[Please note: While the dormitories are not air-conditioned, the Rauch Business Center (RBC) where we have the majority of our learning activities is. In the past, interns have found the temperature in the RBC to be too cold. We, therefore, recommend you bring a sweater, long-sleeve shirt, or something similar to wear in case you find the temperature in the RBC uncomfortably cool.]
What else should I bring?
National dress: There are several occasions on which you will be asked to wear dress representative of your country’s culture and heritage, including the Opening Dinner, and GV Culture Nights.
Children’s book: speaking of children, if you can, we urge you to bring a child’s story book written in English (that’s the hard part!) that is popular in your country. We donate these books to one of the local elementary school districts in an attempt to bring the world to American school children.
Personal expenses: you will need approximately US $1,000 for food and personal expenses. See detailed budget.
Laptops:
Computer resources are available in Rauch Business Center for all interns to use however all global villagers are encouraged to bring a personal laptop if available.
Rauch Business Center (RBC) where the majority of GV sessions are held is wireless throughout the building. Professional discretion in the use of laptops during official sessions is expected.
The residence facilities have wireless connectivity in the common areas and LAN connections available in private rooms. A staff member will be available to help you connect your laptop to the Lehigh system.
What airport should I fly into and other travel information:
Arrival by Air:
Lehigh University is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania just 50 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles southwest of New York City. The university comprises three contiguous campuses encompassing 1,600 acres and is easily reached via air or ground transportation.
The Lehigh Valley International Airport, just 6 miles from campus, is served by many major airlines. Also within driving distance is Philadelphia International Airport (65 miles from campus) and Newark Liberty International Airport (73 miles from campus). Formalities/ Personal Security:
The majority of Global Villagers do not encounter any problems clearing Immigration and Customs checkpoints upon their arrival at New York’s Kennedy (JFK), Newark-Liberty (EWR), or Lehigh Valley International (ABE) airports. However, to help expedite the process, please have all your documentation handy before you approach the check-in desks. Make sure you pack all your important papers, selection letters, contact phone number for Global Village (610-392-2389) etc. in your CARRY-ON LUGGAGE. You do not retrieve your checked baggage until after you clear Immigration.
Throughout the entire arrival process, please try to be patient and understanding even if the official is not. The vast majority of our customs officers are highly –trained, polite professionals. Hopefully, you will meet one of our best.
Address for Delivery of LOST LUGGAGE:
If your airline loses your luggage please give them this address. Our offices are only open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Be sure to place this address and phone number on your luggage tag.
